Dropping the R

Not long after I moved to Boston, I remember someone talking about "The Cos".  I was trying to connect what they were saying with Bill Cosby (the only "Cos" I knew of).  They were talking about cars.  This morning when I was leaving for work I had a brief conversation with my neighbor and he said, "It's going to be wom today."  Wom as in warm.  I understand Boston-ese better than I speak it!

Then there's the added "ER" on the end of words ending in a vowel; like Priscill-er
;)

When I first moved here 15 years ago, I lost my wallet in a taxi and had to call to find out if they had found it. Truly, I could only understand about half of what the guy said on the other end of the line! My skills have significantly improved.

And how about "bubbla"? (That's bubbler, which is what native bostonians call drinking fountains) :)

I remember my first trip to the grocery store...a CARRIAGE??? And then the bagger asked if I wanted my milk in a bag...I couldn't understand a word of what she said & asked her to repeat it about 4 times. Finally I just had to tell her that I couldn't understand what she was saying. The cashier looked at me and repeated it in my english...I was so embarrassed!!

I like that TY ad where the guy asks "Jimmies or sprinkles?", ...and ends with "Manhattan Chowder?-never heard of it".

The different phrases are more interesting to me than replacing an R with an AH. Black & white frappe anyone?

Its me again (open nerve, Brian?)... I just hate when they try to do a Boston accent in a movie. They butcher it every time. It ruins the movie for people from heah.

Just last week my second grader came home from school saying she "sawr something really cool." I love how "r"s get added where there are none (like the word "saw" and get dropped where there is one (like the word car". My kids go to a charter school, where just about everyone (parents included!) call it the "chahtah" school. Oh, and also love how one syllable words like "sure" get made into two "shuah." Love it.
